Three former activists from a student group were on Saturday sentenced to prison terms ranging from 30 to 36 months for conspiracy to incite subversion.
Wong Yat-chin, Chan Chi-sum and Jessica Chu – from the now-disbanded group Student Politicism – earlier pleaded guilty to the national security offence.
Wong, 21, the group’s former convenor, was jailed for 36 months, while Chan, 21, and Chu, 19, received 34 and 30 months respectively.
A fourth defendant, Alice Wong, 20, was sent to a training centre.
The District Court heard they set up street booths between October 2020 and June last year, where they chanted a pro-independence slogan and called on people to overthrow the SAR and central governments.
In sentencing, judge Kwok Wai-kin said although the actual and potential damage they might have caused with their actions was ‘limited’, they might nonetheless have misled young children or ‘immature people’ into thinking that Hong Kong is not part of China.
Student Politicism was disbanded days after their arrests in September last year.
