If anyone thought extradition of fugitives to Taiwan was going to be tricky, spare a thought for these two Taiwan residents: they are victims of a crime and want to go home, but will be stuck in Hong Kong for months.

The duo at the centre of this bizarre tale is two Persian kittens.

A Hong Kong woman allegedly stole them from a breeder in Taiwan and smuggled them into the city by stuffing them underneath her clothes and pretending to be pregnant.

The breeder, Chang Chin-yi, travelled to Hong Kong earlier this week. She said she managed to get her pets back after the alleged cat thief felt remorse and gave them up.

But Chang said her dreams of returning home quickly with her pets, which are worth HK$70,000, have been dashed as Hong Kong authorities have told her the cats have to be in quarantine till July.

Before turning the cats over to the authorities, Chang met the media to show off her beloved possessions.

"This is a nightmare ... the whole thing," she said. "But I wish Hong Kong, the government, can do something for us."

Lawmaker Jeremy Tam, who has been helping Chang, believed there’s enough evidence to arrest the suspect.
