Former opposition lawmaker Ted Hui, who said last month that he was going into exile, has accused HSBC of cancelling his credit cards and his family's cards for political reasons.

Writing on his social media page, Hui said the bank had told him that all his credit cards – as well as that of his family members – had been "unilaterally cancelled".

He added that "as a result of consumption refunds", he and his family had money left in the credit card accounts instead of owing to the bank.

There are a few tens of thousands of dollars left, and he's told that it might not be possible to return the balance to him.

He slammed HSBC for acting for political reasons, noting that the police had never asked HSBC to cancel the credit card accounts.

"My family and I have been customers of HSBC Premier for decades. We have always had a good credit history. Our past mortgages and repayments were all handled via HSBC," Hui said.

HSBC said on Saturday that it could not comment on the accounts in question, and any enquiries should go to relevant law enforcement agencies. It said it had to comply with local laws in all cases.
