Riot police started firing round after round of tear gas again at around 9.30pm as they clashed with hundreds of protesters near Yuen Long MTR Station.
The vast majority of the tens of thousands of people who had earlier defied the police by marching through the town had already left the scene.
But a few hundred had remained for some time near the station, with a long lull in tensions as both protesters and police officers rested.
Tensions soon rose again, with officers repeatedly firing tear gas as they tried to push the protesters even further back to the train station.
Much of the tear gas appeared to blow right back at the officers due to the wind.
While some protesters urged the crowd to retreat, some surged forward towards a line of police officers.
The standoff continued, with a number of social workers and preachers forming a cordon in between the police and protesters.
