Tanya Chan Says She Is Still Recovering

Civic Party lawmaker Tanya Chan, who is to be sentenced on Monday over the 2014 Occupy protests, said that she is still recovering from her brain surgery last month.

She was convicted in April for inciting others to commit public nuisance, and inciting others to incite, in relation to the protests.

Her sentencing was delayed after a life-threatening brain tumour was found.

Speaking outside West Kowloon Court, Chan says she now has trouble with her sight.

"My main impediment is that I have still got double vision," she said.

Chan said this had also affected her balance. She said she found it hard to get around, especially in places she is not familiar with.

She also said she has submitted to the court documents on her latest state of health.

The lawmaker had revealed her illness in April on the day she was supposed to be sentenced over the 2014 Occupy protests.

She said then that the tumour was a little bit bigger than a ping pong ball. As it was already pressing on her brain stem and bending it, an urgent surgery was advised.

Her lawyer had submitted MRI scans and a report from her radiologist to the court to show that she needed surgery urgently, and the judge then postponed her sentencing to June 10.

On April 24, her fellow legislator Shiu Ka-chun, Occupy co-founders Benny Tai and Chan Kin-man, and activist Raphael Wong were jailed for between eight and 16 months. Four others were given suspended jail terms or community service orders.
