Student unions at seven major higher education institutions on Tuesday announced that members will be boycotting classes and joining a protest against the government's extradition bill outside Legco on Wednesday.
The students, from the University of Science and Technology, Chinese University, Baptist University, Education University, Polytechnic University, City University and the Academy of Performing Arts, said they will be joining a protest in Tim Mei Avenue.
The unions said the government has “lost its sense” and they plan to escalate their action against the "authoritarian government which ignores people's demands".
They said the government is using a Taiwan murder last year as an excuse to pass the legal changes and once they are brought in Hong Kong residents will have no protection against being extradited to the mainland.
Education University’s student union leader Leung Yiu-ting said the students will not bow down to the strong arm tactics of the government.
