Students have chased after the head of Baptist University at a rally held there on Wednesday evening. The rally was in support of Keith Fong, the head of the student union who was arrested on Tuesday night for buying 10 laser pointers.
The students tried to pressure their President Roland Chin into condemning the arrest of Fong. But their demand was repeatedly sidestepped by the university head, who only said he was shocked by the incident and would provide support to the arrested student.
Fong was arrested in Sham Shui Po on Tuesday night on suspicion of possessing offensive weapons, after he bought the laser pointers at a stall on Apliu Street. Fong said the pointers were for star-gazing.
Participants at the rally chased Professor Chin and tried to stop him as he suddenly left through a back door.
"He didn't say anything very strongly," said one student. "He didn't protect our students even though our police is using violence to our students."
The university’s Director of Student Affairs, Gordon Tang, said they wanted to find out what happened before condemning anyone.
Meanwhile, more than 40 members of the teaching staff at the university issued a statement accusing police of abusing their power and trying to spread what they called white terror.
They said the arrest was unreasonable and the charge against Keith Fong fabricated
