A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in prison after he was convicted of three counts of resisting police during an anti-government protest at the Harbour City mall in Tsim Sha Tsui on Christmas Eve in 2019.
He was released on bail pending an appeal.
Anti-government protests broke out in various parts of the city on Christmas Eve in 2019, with violent clashes erupting between protesters and the police in areas such as Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok.
Kowloon City Magistracy heard that Lo Chun-sing's resistance had led to an officer breaking his finger and another injuring his forehead.
Magistrate Jacky Ip said on Tuesday that the defendant kept wiggling his body when he was being pinned to the ground by officers and used his elbow to hit an officer in the stomach.
He added that the defendant continued to resist when three other officers came to subdue him, causing injuries to himself and the officers.
Ip said a deterrent sentence was needed and the defendant was given prison sentences of between three and six months for each of the three offences, to be served concurrently.
The magistrate also decided to release the 21-year-old on bail of HK$10,000 after the student expressed his intention to file an appeal.
