Lifeguards sounded the alarm on Wednesday over what they say is an explosion in the numbers of a type of poisonous spiked worm on the territory's beaches.
Hundreds of what appear to be bristle worms have been spotted on Tsuen Wan's Lido beach and on Anglers' beach nearby.
The creatures have also been found on beaches in Tuen Mun and the outlying islands.
Anson Tang from the Government Lifeguards General Union said some beachgoers have been scared off from going into the water, while others have actually been injured by the worms.
Tang said only a small number of bristle worms were found last year.
He said the Leisure and Cultural Services Department should issue guidelines on how to treat any injuries due to the creatures.
According to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, the bristle worms' feet are filled with venom which will cause a burning pain if touched.
