  • Six arrested over employment scam

Police have arrested six people in connection with an employment scam using women's personal data to borrow over a million dollars.

Officers say the 16 victims were job-seekers and were told to provide their ID documents and addresses after they were recruited through social media.

The syndicate then used the information to apply for loans. The police say summer is the peak for job scams, and appeal to people not to hand over their personal data lightly.

Meanwhile a lawmaker believes hundreds of people may have fallen victim to a multi-million dollar online pyramid fraud.

The DAB's Ben Chan has received complaints from at least thirty people who say they were conned into buying social media accounts on a mobile messaging app, claimed to be similar to Wechat.

They were told that they could get a return of at least US$54 per day by inviting more people to join. But they were no longer able to receive payments after the developer closed its business in April last year.

Chan says although such pyramid schemes are well-known here, this one targets elderly people unfamiliar with technology.
