Police Commissioner Stephen Lo has revealed that the number of officers arrested last year for suspected criminal offences jumped to 45, compared with 29 in 2017.
But speaking at a Legco panel meeting, Lo defended an internal working group set up by the force to manage its officers’ integrity, saying it is too early to judge whether it has failed in its task.
“There were many causes for committing those crimes, including personal reasons, greed, inappropriate sexual desire or peer influence. So to judge the work of the working group just by the figures alone, it might be premature,” he said.
He added that the force takes such cases seriously and deals with them impartially.
The total number of crimes recorded in Hong Kong dropped slightly last year to about 54,000 – the lowest figure since 1974.
