Shanghai has reported Covid-related deaths for three straight day as seven more patients passed away.
Officials said the seven patients – most of them aged above 70 – had suffered from a range of illnesses, including as cancer, high blood pressure and coronary heart diseases.
The death toll in Shanghai from the current outbreak stood at 17.
The new deaths were reported on Wednesday, as the city logged more than 18,000 new local infections.
Of the new cases, 16,407 were asymptomatic – down almost 1,000 cases from the day before.
There were 2,494 symptomatic cases.
Wu Qianyu from the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission said the number of infections is seeing a downward trend.
“The number of infections in places that have been reporting more than 100 daily cases have dropped for three consecutive days, and the virus transmission in the community has been brought under control,” she said.
She also noted that two districts in the city had managed to achieve zero infections.
Still, the financial hub accounted for the bulk of Covid cases reported on the mainland, as the National Health Commission reported a total of more than 19,800 new infections, among them 2,753 are symptomatic.
Of the symptomatic cases, 133 were from the northeastern province of Jilin, while 14 were confirmed in Guangdong.
