Commerce minister Algernon Yau said on Thursday that RTHK will tell good stories of the nation and Hong Kong in the Year of the Rabbit, as the broadcaster celebrates its 95th anniversary.

Speaking at the station's Lunar New Year event, Yau said the public broadcaster will do more to help people living here and elsewhere learn more about Hong Kong.

"I am very confident that in the Year of the Rabbit, RTHK will shine brighter and use multimedia platforms to tell good stories of Hong Kong and China, to provide more programmes on the topics like the Basic Law, the Constitution, national security education and the Greater Bay Area," the minister said in a speech.

"These can help bring about social cohesion, and make the public, especially young people, more knowledgeable about the country and society."

The commerce head also noted that RTHK will provide multimedia broadcasts in different languages.

"Foreigners living in Hong Kong and those in the mainland and overseas can know more about the latest developments in the SAR and its unlimited potential," he said.

Speaking at the same function, Director of Broadcasting Eddie Cheung said a highlight of the station's 95th anniversary celebrations will be the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Award Concert in May.

Exhibitions will be set up in different districts to showcase the development of RTHK, and there will also be special programmes about the development of broadcasting in the SAR, Cheung said.

He added that RTHK will collaborate with different government departments and public organisations to tell a good Hong Kong story.

Referring to Broadcasting House’s proximity to one of Hong Kong’s most iconic landmarks, Cheung said: “With the Lion Rock behind, we have a lot of touching stories of HongKongers working hard.”

"Besides telling a good China and Hong Kong story, RTHK colleagues will make sure that the station itself is one of the best stories of Hong Kong."
