  • Review of political crisis needed: Tsang Yok-sing

The former president of the Legislative Council, Tsang Yok-sing, says a comprehensive review of the current political crisis is needed to take the city forward.

Tsang said he believes many people feel hopeless because they feel society is unjust, and they can't see a timetable for universal suffrage in Hong Kong.

The pro-Beijing stalwart however suggested that any review would need to be initiated by academics or local think tanks.

"I noticed that when [Chief Executive] Carrie [Lam] spoke publicly, I think a couple of weeks ago, she mentioned these deep-seated problems and she suggested that maybe we should form a platform for people from various sectors, various backgrounds to talk," he said. "I hope that this will be materialise in time. Carrie Lam has made it very clear that the government should not take the lead."

"Now if either the academics or perhaps think tanks in Hong Kong would like to take the lead, I hope that it will be supported by various sectors in our community."

Tsang has previously said the only way to resolve the current impasse would be to reopen discussion on political reform.
