Lee Cheuk-yan talks to RTHK's Joanne Wong
About 30 people on Thursday marched from Western Police Station to Beijing's liaison office to demand the release of jailed workers and labour rights supporters across the border.
The Confederation of Trade Unions (CTU), which organised the demonstration, said nearly 40 people have been detained since July when workers from a Jasic Technology factory in Shenzhen rallied for union rights.
The CTU called on Beijing to free those being held and allow them to go home for the Lunar New Year. Those detained include university students who demonstrated in support of the workers.
Lee Cheuk-yan, the general secretary of the confederation, called the arrests "ironic".
"In this very special case, it’s not just the workers, labour NGOs but students that are learning Marxism at school [who were arrested]," he said.
"They want to implement the ideals of Marxism in the reality of Chinese society where the workers are being exploited. They are believers of Marxism," Lee said.
Lee told RTHK's Joanne Wong that the crackdown that started six months ago is still contiuing.
