New People's Party chairwoman Regina Ip on Friday urged the government to shut down RTHK's school educational television (ETV) service, saying young people seldom watch TV nowadays and the cost of producing these programmes is too high.

At a special Finance Committee meeting at the Legislative Council, Ip said a recent government audit report had highlighted problems with RTHK's ETV service, including low productivity and a lack of viewers.

Ip added that between 2004 and 2015, the number of kindergartens and schools watching ETV dropped by as much as 66 percent.

"I think we should put an end to ETV production – a very expensive production by RTHK with low cost effectiveness," Ip said.

"The government should adopt a more up-to-date mode of digital transmission and online transmission," she added.

In reply, the Education Secretary Kevin Yeung said his bureau will conduct a review, and consider whether it is suitable for educational programmes to continue to be aired on TV.

Ip’s latest broadside against the public broadcaster comes scarcely a month after she suggested at a separate Legco panel that the station should consider scrapping its news service, saying private companies are already offering similar services.
