Executive councillor Regina Ip says if a jurisdiction can't keep a promise to protect a suspect's rights, then Hong Kong won't honour further extradition requests from there.

The New People's Party chairwoman was responding to a comment from Civic Party lawmaker Alvin Yeung, who had questioned whether the government could protect the rights of fugitives sent to the mainland.

"There will not be any further renditions between us and that jurisdiction," she said while speaking on RTHK's "Hong Kong Today" radio programme.

"If they are unable to keep your promise, we will not deal with them again."

Following a massive street protest on Sunday against the government's extradition proposals, more than 50 businesses have announced a strike for Wednesday, when lawmakers start debating the contentious bill, which would allow for extraditions to the mainland.
