A Hong Kong member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Kennedy Wong, has urged people to join a number of pro-police rallies on Saturday, saying the force is undoubtedly much more civilised than its overseas counterparts.

Wong said the police have been much more "gentle" in handling recent protests than officers abroad would have been.

"I personally have stayed in England and the US before. I think our Hong Kong police force is really civilised and very gentle compared with many other Western countries," he said on Friday.

Wong called on people to join demonstrations outside Central, Kwun Tong and Kwai Chung police stations on Saturday to show their support for the force, with plans to hand officers cards thanking them for their recent work.

Protesters are demanding an inquiry into the police's response to the anti-extradition bill campaign, accusing officers of using excessive force and ignoring mob attacks on protesters and passers-by in Yuen Long, North Point and Tsuen Wan.

Wong said that any members of the public who feel the police have acted "brutally or illegally" can always make use of the existing complaint channels.
