Around a hundred anti-extradition bill protesters held a demonstration at the airport against the government, and in support of the city-wide strike.

They wrote placards and carried banners stating the five demands of the protesters - including an independent inquiry into the saga and the complete withdrawal of the bill.

Vivian Wong, one of the protesters, said they chose to hold a protest at the airport to tell the world what is happening in Hong Kong.

She said an attack by gangsters in Yuen Long on July 21 and a lack of police action made her feel the safety of people in the city is at stake. "We cannot trust the police," she said.

This is the latest in a series of anti-extradition protests at the airport.

The government said as of 2 pm on Monday, 77 flights were cancelled, but it insisted the situation at Chek Lap Kok in the morning was generally normal.

It noted that some staff and visitors might not have been able to make it to the airport because of the traffic chaos.

Officials say they expect flights to increase gradually during the afternoon and evening.

The Civil Aviation Department disputed claims that a third of air traffic controllers went on strike on Monday. It did say more staff took sick leave than normal.
