Protester Kam Tsang talks to RTHK's Jimmy Choi

About a dozen people from several concern groups held a protest outside the Islands District Council in Central on Monday against the government’s mega reclamation plan east of Lantau.

The demonstration was held before the district council was scheduled to discuss the plan.

Protesters from groups including Save Lantau Alliance and Greeners Action said the project is totally unnecessary and will seriously harm the environment.

The Lantau Tomorrow Vision, announced by Chief Executive Carrie Lam in her policy address, involves the creation of 1,700 hectares of reclaimed land, including an artificial island near Kau Yi Chau in the first stage of the project.

Protesters said there are more than enough brownfield sites and other types of land for development, but the government has simply not considered using them.

One protester, Kam Tsang, told RTHK's Jimmy Choi that he is also concerned about the cost of the project.

“We don’t have the money for this. This essentially will use up all the reserves that we have in Hong Kong,” he said.
