Around thirty people have staged a protest outside the US Consulate General in Central, calling on the Consul General Kurt Tong to apologise and step down.
The protesters described Tong’s comments that Beijing’s increasing interference in SAR affairs could affect the business environment here as “slanderous”, and said his remarks have seriously damaged Sino-US relationship.
They added that the recent political events in Hong Kong had nothing to do with the business sector, and demanded that Tong stop “meddling” in local affairs.
Separately, the lone Hong Kong delegate to the National People's Congress Standing Committee, Tam Yiu-chung, also said in Beijing that the top US diplomat's comments were inappropriate.
