  • Protesters call for end to Hong Kong fur trade

Around 50 activists from several animal rights groups marched on Saturday to the Convention Centre, where the Hong Kong International Fur Fair is being held, to call for an end to the fur trade.

Many in the crowd wore fox face masks, while others dressed up in fox costumes.

Simon Newstead, from the Hong Kong Vegan Group, said he wants Hong Kong to turn from a top fur exporter into a world leader on banning fur.

“If you look at the brands, fur is out of fashion – it’s ugly,” he said.

Newstead said many fashion companies have banned fur and remained successful.

“Their sales haven’t dropped, they haven’t had a hit to their business – so we don’t think it has an economic impact to companies to stop the fur trade as well.”
