  • Protesters besiege police station over arrest

Police inside Sham Shiu Po station fired rounds of tear-gas at hundreds of protesters who besieged the building on Tuesday night, following the arrest of a student leader.

Baptist University University Student Union president Kieth Fong had been detained on suspicion of carrying offensive weapons, after plainclothed police said they found 10 laser pointers in his bag.

He was taken to the Caritas Medical Centre after feeling sick while being held at Sham Shui Po station.

Hundreds of people flocked to the area as news of Fong's arrest spread. The station was quickly besieged by the crowd, who calledfor his immediate release.

Some of the demonstrators daubed graffiti on the building's walls while others shone lasers at the officers inside.

Around 11.20pm, volleys of tear gas were fired from inside the station at the crowd on Yen Chow Street. Police vans carrying reinforcements - many in riot gear - were deployed to surrounding streets.

Officers pushed the demonstrators down towards Apliu Street. Local residents voiced their concerns, some reminding officers that arrested suspects still have rights while others complained about the noise being made.

Police remained out on the streets, and by 1am most of the protesters had gone.
