TV footage showed riot police rushing to Wong Tai Sin MTR Station at around 10.45pm on Saturday.

Riot police stormed into an entrance of Wong Tai Sin MTR Station on Saturday night, apparently in order to make arrests.

They cornered two people by the steps and searched them before holding them there.

It wasn't clear whether the two people, one in white clothes and the other dressed in black, were anti-government protesters.

But a number of protesters had gathered outside Wong Tai Sin Police Station shortly before, having marched there from Mong Kok.

Shortly after the station incident, several riot officers pinned a man in a white t-shirt down on the ground at a separate location in Wong Tai Sin.

He was later taken away through a crowd of people.

Warning flags soon went up as riot police engaged in a stand-off with a large number of people in the district.

Rather than protesters, they appeared to be residents who were unhappy with the police action.

By around 11.30pm, scores of riot police retreated to their vehicles parked in a bus terminal, pursued by a massive crowd of people booing the officers and telling them to leave the area.

Around midnight, some officers inside a van surrounded by a large group suddenly burst out, only to be attacked by people throwing umbrellas and setting off fire extinguishers.
