Pro-establishment figures, such as DAB chairwoman Starry Lee, have welcomed Chief Executive’s latest comments on the extradition controversy, saying Carrie Lam’s declaration that the government's proposal is dead should ease people’s concerns.
Lee added that she was happy to see the CE reach out to young people by agreeing to their demands for an open dialogue. She urged students to take advantage of the opportunity and meet Lam without pre-conditions.
But the DAB chief said the government still needs to do more to listen to young people.
"We can see that a lot of young people use phones and internet to communicate. Based on my understanding, that part is the weakest part for the government," she said.
Meanwhile, Executive Councillor and New People’s Party chairwoman Regina Ip agreed with Lam that Exco members need to do more to gauge public opinion and accurately reflect them to the Chief Executive.
Her comments came after James Tien, honorary chairman of the Liberal Party, said certain Exco members offered "bad advice" to the government over extradition.
In particular, Ip said members with finance and commercial backgrounds should do more to explain government policies to their sectors.
