  • Poll wins reflect people's desire: Wang Guangya

The former head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, Wang Guangya, said on Wednesday that the outcome of the Legco polls last weekend reflect Hong Kong people's aspirations for a peaceful and harmonious society.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing, Wang said he was pleased with the outcome of Sunday's by-elections, where the pro-establishment camp was able to win two seats previously occupied by the opposition.

He said to some extent, the opposition camp has itself to blame for the result it ended up with.

Wang said pro-democracy legislators were the ones who initiated the oath-taking controversy that led to the disqualification of six councillors and they had breached the Basic Law and the "One Country, Two Systems" principle. He called on the camp to stop politicising every issue, saying this is clearly not what society wants.

Wang added that he wouldn't comment on a bid for a judicial review aimed at unseating Hong Kong Island's lawmaker-elect Au Nok-hin, saying only that he respects citizens' legal rights.

Wang said his role as a National People's Congress delegate is a completely new task for him and he will do his best to continue serving the country.
