Police on Saturday evening appealed to members of the public to avoid going to Yuen Long as tensions escalated at multiple locations in the area.
The force issued an announcement saying it had started clearing protests “from west to east” from 5pm and the operation was still ongoing.
It said officers had used tear gas, and there were violent clashes at various locations, where protesters had removed railings on the roadside, used metal fences to build barricades, and thrown bricks and other hard objects at officers.
The announcement called on protesters to disperse towards the direction of Yuen Long MTR Station, in order to “prevent the situation from deteriorating”.
The MTR said at around 19.20 that West Rail Line trains were not stopping at Long Ping Station, on the request of the police.
However, additional trains were being arranged for passengers boarding at Long Ping.
