  • Police seize $134m worth of cocaine from two cars

Police have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of drug trafficking after seizing about 100 kilograms of cocaine worth about $134 million.

Officers at a press briefing on Sunday said they apprehended the suspect outside a village house in Pak Sha Tsuen in Yuen Long on Friday, where they found several bags of cocaine allegedly hidden inside two cars owned by the suspect.

Officers also found tools inside the suspect's home, used for packaging drugs.

Senior superintendent Ng Wing-sze of the Narcotics Bureau said this was the third case in a year involving a drug seizure worth more than $100 million, and the first case in which a vehicle was used to hide the drugs.

Ng said in previous cases, drug syndicates would use industrial buildings or private residential units to store drugs. But in this case, they used abandoned vehicles with expired vehicle licenses, and parked them in rural areas.

She said this was to avoid arousing suspicion from security guards, residents, and those working on industrial estates.

Ng's colleague, chief inspector Ip Sau-lan, said the suspect was believed to be responsible for drug distribution, and that the force would not rule out further arrests. She said the suspect would appear at Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
