  • Police searches spark protest in Admiralty MTR

There has been a spontaneous demonstration inside Admiralty MTR Station, as people complained about heavy-handed policing.

The area around the Legislative Council has seen a stronger police presence following the clashes between young protesters and officers that took place after Sunday's march against the extradition bill.

On Tuesday evening, officers stopped a number of young people and searched them. They were told to line up as officers went through their bags one-by-one.

Pan-democratic lawmakers soon arrived to protest against the action. Passers-by also gathered, and started chanting slogans calling on the police to leave.

An officer told the legislators that their operation was reasonable, and they only searched "suspicious" people.

Officials have shut off the demonstration zone and Civic Square, and ushered in police officers to secure the area around the government headquarters.

Even the lawn at Tamar Park, where "one person picnics" were being planned, was cordoned off for "regular maintenance".
