Police say one of their units was attacked when a man threw a petrol bomb at a police car at 3am on Friday morning.

They said the man threw the device at a car from the police emergency unit - when it drove past police headquarters in Wanchai.

They said the man was holding a bomb that had been ignited and threw it at the car when they asked him what he was doing.

He then drove away in a private car.

Police said they didn't pursue the man because they were worried that the car could catch fire.

One side of the police's car was left covered with soot, but no-one was hurt in the incident.

Police are investigating.

There were no further details.
