Police were forced to open the eastbound lanes of Hennessy Road to the protesters, after scuffles broke out at a particularly crowded section near the Canal Road flyover.
Officers had said before the march began that the eastbound lanes had to be kept free to allow emergency access.
However around 4.30pm demonstrators using the westbound side were upset at being stuck in the heat and unable to move, and some started trying to cross over the barriers.
There was some pushing and shoving as officers tried to stop people from crossing. At one point police raised a a red warning sign saying "Stop Charging Or We Use Force".
However with thousands of people chanting "open the road" and some starting to
push down the barricades officers appeared to relent, and took no action as the protesters spilled across.
