The police were on Monday investigating a suspected murder-suicide in Tuen Mun, in which a 66-year-old man and 60-year-old woman died.
Officers had responded to a report at around 3.40am on Monday of a man suspected to have fallen from height on Tuen Shun Street. The man was found with multiple injuries and certified dead at the scene.
Officers later found his wife, a 60-year-old civil servant, lying unconscious at their flat in Tuen Mun Town Plaza. She was found with injuries to her mouth and throat and taken to Tuen Mun Hospital, but was declared dead at 5.25am.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.
Assistant district commander Lam Hing-cheung said their preliminary investigation suggests the man jumped to his death after attacking his wife while she slept.
A 30-centimetre-long cleaver that officers believe may have been used was also recovered from the flat.
Lam said the couple had been married for around 40 years, and there had been no reports of domestic violence.
He added that officers did not see any signs of a break-in and found no suicide notes inside the flat.
He said they will look into the couple's relationship, as well as their financial situation and psychological condition.
