Police on Sunday announced the seizure of around 900 kilos of cannabis buds during a recent anti-narcotics operation, the largest haul of the drug on record.
A kilogramme of methamphetamine was also found in the raids, pushing the total value of the illicit drugs seized up to over HK$100 million.
Officers said the drugs were found in three industrial buildings in Tuen Mun and San Po Kong.
They are believed to have been shipped into Hong Kong from North America, packaged as construction materials, before being stored in the industrial premises.
Two men were arrested in connection with the haul, and will appear in court on Monday.
Narcotics Bureau superintendent Lau Kai-pang said he's noticed increasing demand for cannabis among young people.
"We see that cannabis has become one of the popular cultures, which is wrong, among the youths. And that explains why in quite a lot of entertainment premises, they have been promoting the use of cannabis," he said.
He added that some may underestimate the harm of cannabis as a number of countries and states have legalised the drug for recreational use.
"We see that this is a trend since the legalisation of cannabis in some overseas countries. This explains why there has been an increasing amount of cannabis seized," Lau said.
