Police have fired tear gas at anti-extradition protesters in Western, not far from the liaison office.
It was part of a police operation to disperse demonstrators who had taken up positions on Des Voeux Road West and Connaught Road West.
Police said a group of protesters had gathered near Western police station. The force said some protestors hurled bricks at officers, and the situation was drastically deteriorating.
Police fired tear gas at around 7 pm, and did so again more than half an hour later.
Police have appealed to the demonstrators to leave the area immediately and not to charge police cordon lines. Members of the public are also urged to avoid traveling to the area.
Our reporters at the scene said black-clad protesters shouted at nearby residents, telling them to close their windows.
Some of the protesters have retreated but remained in the area.
Democratic Party lawmaker Ted Hui was at the scene to try to mediate.
