  • Police chief looks forward to new term

Police commissioner Raymond Siu on Saturday said he's happy to be staying on - after his tenure was extended for two years.

He'll reach retirement age this April, and it was announced earlier that he would remain in his position until 2025.

Speaking on an RTHK programme, he thanked the government and his colleagues for their trust and support.

He said he's willing to continue to serve the public, noting that Hong Kong had restored order from chaos and was moving forward towards prosperity.

Siu said there are a lot of talented police officers, noting that the extension of his tenure is to facilitate a smooth transition of the senior management of the force.

Asked about his expectations for his successor, the police chief said it would be important for leaders of the force to be able to communicate and support frontline staff.

"We have close to 30,000 police officers including auxiliary officers. To support our colleagues to carry out their work effectively and professionally, we attach importance to our internal communication and supporting our frontline staff," he said.

Siu was appointed police chief in June 2021, succeeding Chris Tang who became the Secretary for Security under Chief Executive John Lee's administration.
