Police chief Chris Tang has condemned an attack by a group of black-clad people on security guards at Chinese University.

He said on Tuesday that a student from the university has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the incident the day before.

The police commissioner added that officers are investigating whether others involved in the attack are also students from the university.

Chinese University said eight people went on a rampage at a security counter set up by the school near the University MTR Station on Monday, damaging facilities and throwing an unknown white powder at the guards before fleeing.

According to CUHK campus radio, the group had urged students not to show their IDs to security staff.

One of the guards was sent to hospital for treatment.

The school called the police and condemned the attack, saying it will cooperate fully with officers in their investigation.

Tang said he was disheartened to learn about the incident at his alma mater.

"I'm angry that the students attacked security guards who were doing their job. Since when did our university students become rioters who ignore law and order?" he said.
