  • Police avoided a repeat of June 4: Chan Kin-por

The chairman of Legco’s finance committee, Chan Kin-por, said it’s lucky that a Hong Kong version of the June 4 crackdown did not happen at Legco on Monday evening.

The insurance sector lawmaker praised police officers for retreating from the building before the protesters barged into it, saying they have prevented injuries and deaths in a dangerous situation.

“Last night was a very dangerous situation where you have a very small area with hundreds of demonstrators and police. Most of the police ammunition are for long shooting. So if they have to combat in a very small place, it’s very very dangerous,”

“I think we’re lucky enough we didn’t have a real fighting that costs human lives,” he said.

He said the finance committee could not meet in the coming two weeks because the Legco complex has been seriously damaged.

He said he doesn’t know when councillors can scrutinise the 44 remaining funding requests from the government, including the plan to raise civil servants’ salaries.

He predicted tens of millions of dollars would be needed to repair the damages to the Legco building.
