People heading to the mainland once quarantine-free travel resumes from Sunday will need to get PCR tests in advance and fill out health declaration forms, Beijing officials have announced.

Covid tests at the border will not be required for everybody, but travellers will have to provide proof of a negative PCR result obtained up to 48 hours before their trip.

The website of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office (HKMAO) states that travellers will also have to make a health declaration on arrival.

Anyone found to have a fever or who declares a relevant health problem will be tested again for Covid after they have crossed the border.

The HKMAO said people found to be infected will be told to isolate themselves if they are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, while more seriously ill people should be sent for medical treatment.

The office also announced that the authorities will resume processing travel and business visas for mainlanders to visit Hong Kong.

It said more flights between Hong Kong, Macau and the mainland will gradually be introduced and ferry services will be resumed in a gradual and orderly manner.
