The Secretary for Transport, Frank Chan, said on Saturday the government is in discussions with the MTR Corporation about whether to partially open the first section of the scandal-plagued Shatin to Central rail link.
Investigations are continuing into allegations of shoddy construction and potential structural safety issues at the link’s Hung Hom station, which would be the final stop of the Tai Wai to Hung Hom section of the rail link.
Construction on this part of the rail project was supposed to have finished by the middle of this year. Work on the remaining Hung Hom to Admiralty section of the rail link is scheduled for completion in 2021.
Chan said he would like to open as much of the link as possible, but would first need to ensure that safety, transport links, and signal systems are all up to standard.
