Two dozen pro-democracy lawmakers have written a joint letter to President Xi Jinping, urging him to order the release of Liu Xia, the widow of the dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo.
Liu Xia was placed under house arrest on the mainland almost eight years ago and is still being held, despite her husband's death from liver cancer while in detention last year.
In a recording recently made public by exiled writer Liao Yiwu, Liu Xia could be heard sobbing and saying she was "ready to die" in protest against her house arrest.
The Civic Party's Kwok Ka-ki, who was one of the signatories to the letter, said Liu Xia is obviously seriously depressed by her situation.
"She showed a very clear intention that she may commit suicide if her call for freedom is denied again ... please Mr Xi Jinping, allow her to have freedom. She has suffered a lot already." Kwok said.
