Oxfam Trailwalker (OTW), the SAR's largest annual hiking fundraising event, will be held this year from February 24 to 26 with around 400 teams taking part. The event is making a comeback after being suspended for three years because of the pandemic.
With the theme "Back on our feet, resilient in the face of change", Oxfam Hong Kong said all the funds raised will go towards poverty alleviation projects, disaster relief and advocacy work.
"The Oxfam Trailwalker experienced and overcame many difficulties over the past three years because of the pandemic. Despite this, Oxfam Hong Kong, like countless Oxfam Trailwalker participants, persevered through it all and worked hard to put this in-person event together," said Bernard Chan, OTW Steering Group convenor.
"During the pandemic, Oxfam Hong Kong also persevered in the fight against poverty and our work didn't stop. In 2022, we carried out a total of 327 anti-poverty projects in Hong Kong and around the world, and reached nearly 2.2 million people living in poverty."
Participants will begin in Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and end at Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long. In teams of four, they will walk around 100 kilometres within 48 hours.
Wong Ho-chung, one of those taking part said: "Compared with other individual events, the Oxfam Trailwalker focuses more on teamwork. It's important to pay attention to how each teammate is doing on the trail, while also controlling the pace."
