Some prominent pro-democracy politicians will visit Taiwan on Wednesday, to hold discussions with political parties there on Hong Kong's plan to change laws regarding the surrender of fugitives to other jurisdictions, including Taiwan, Macau and the mainland.
The government had said that the changes are aimed at plugging a loophole in the law, which meant authorities here could not hand over a Hong Kong man was who accused of murdering his girlfriend on the island and then returning to the SAR.
The opposition and legal associations have criticised the government plan and have argued that the government's step will make it easier for the authorities to hand over political opponents to the mainland.
Three lawmakers, Raymond Chan, Chu Hoi-dick, and James To together with former lawmaker Nathan Law, will go to Taiwan and meet politicians there to discuss the case with them.
The SAR politicians said they would talk to members of the ruling DPP and opposition Kuomintang, along with some others on Wednesday and Thursday.
Chu said they want to discuss the issue, hear if there are any concerns in Taiwan, and come back to relay the views to the Hong Kong people and the government.
