Clad in black and carrying white flowers, pan-democratic lawmakers paid tribute to a 35-year-old man, who fell to his death last weekend at Pacific Place during an anti-extradition rally there.
This came as lawmakers returned to business after a week of protests over the government's bill, but soon saw the Legco president and pan-democratic lawmakers lock horns over the extradition saga.
The opposition wanted to observe a minute of silence during a Legco meeting to mourn the dead protester, but the request was rejected by Legco president Andrew Leung.
He said Legco would only do so for sitting lawmakers, major politicians or victims of major disasters.
But the Legco president said lawmakers could choose to mourn the deceased protester under different circumstances. Leung later adjourned the meeting for five minutes, to allow lawmakers to pay tribute to the protester.
Meanwhile, Kwok Ka-ki of the Civic Party said Leung should be held responsible for the chaos in the past two weeks for pushing ahead with the debate on the extradition bill.
Hong Kong First lawmaker Claudia Mo asked the Legco president if he would step down or apologise, but Leung ruled that it was not a question on point of order.
