Opposition parties have kick-started a street campaign against the government's extradition plans, calling on people to turn up in large numbers for a protest rally on June 9 to send a message to the world that Hongkongers do not support the "illegitimate law".

Leaders of the Civic Party, who set up a stall to publicise their concerns and educate the public about the proposed changes, said people have to keep fighting even though the chance is slim that the government will withdraw the bill.

Former legislator Margaret Ng said the march probably won't change the government's stance, but it will send out a clear message to the international community that this administration is no longer fit to rule.

"This government doesn't care at all. In their hands, Hong Kong will sink," she said.

Party leader Alvin Yeung said he believes the general public can see the evil side of the extradition bill, despite a massive promotional campaign by the pro-Beijing camp.

"No matter how nice the wrapping paper is, the substance in itself is very bad," he said.
