  • 'Ocean Park to aid Jumbo restaurant's rebirth'

Chief Executive Carrie Lam revealed on Wednesday that the landmark Jumbo Floating Restaurant in Aberdeen has recently been donated to Ocean Park, which is set to run it with non-governmental organisations as part of a wider government plan to revitalise the Southern District.

Lam said during her Policy Address that the government will help the theme park run the restaurant with NGOs on a non-profit-making basis.

She said this is one project under a wider "Invigorating Island South" initiative to promote the district, and includes the "rebirth of Ocean Park", with an emphasis on its strengths in education and conservation.

Lam said the government will also look at building a water sports centre at the Shek O Quarry site under a public-private partnership.

Other proposals under the policy initiative include promoting new marine tourism routes, and "enhancing" cultural and leisure facilities in Aberdeen and Wong Chuk Hang – such as the typhoon shelter and promenade, as well as Ap Lei Chau Main Street.

Clarisse Yeung, who chairs the group Hong Kong Culture Monitor, said the jumbo restaurant is a great sightseeing spot.

But Yeung also said the government should have consulted the Southern District Council about the facelift plan. "I'm not sure if the neighbourhood would like this idea," she said.
