  • Observatory to push notification when temp hits 35C

The Observatory says it will push a notification in its 'MyObservatory' weather app when the temperature hits 35 degrees Celsius from Friday.

Last year the mercury hit 35 degrees or higher fifteen times, breaking all previous records for Hong Kong, said Acting Assistant Director Cheng Yuen-chung.

He said he hopes the notification system will raise the public's awareness: “The risk [of heat stroke] is higher in hot or very hot conditions. Therefore the most important thing is to increase the awareness,” he said.

He reminded the public to take preventive measures against the heat after receiving the notification.

"Beware of health conditions and ensure adequate rest, drink more water, and maintain a normal body temperature. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice promptly," he said.

Meanwhile, the service provider of Care-on-Call said that up until Thursday, the number of elderly people calling in for help in May had reached 2,416 - 20 percent higher than in April.

"We cannot directly relate it to the hot weather, but that definitely plays a part," said Johnny Yuen from the Senior Citizens Home Safety Association.

He added that the rebound in Covid cases might be another reason.
