The Observatory has issued the Strong Wind Signal Number 3 as a tropical depression heads towards the west coast of Guangdong. It says winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

The Observatory said people should securely fasten objects that are likely to be blown away, or take them indoors. It also warned the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

The number 3 signal replaced the Standby Signal Number 1 at 9.15 pm.

The Transport Department said people should pay attention to any special transport or traffic arrangements.
