The Observatory said it had replaced the strong wind signal number 3 with the standby signal number 1 just before 1pm on Sunday.

It said Lionrock was gradually moving away from Hong Kong and the wind had moderated significantly.

"When Lionrock no longer poses a threat to Hong Kong, the Observatory will cancel all the tropical cyclone warning signals," it said in a statement.

The Observatory warned that the seas were still rough, and warned members of the public to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

While better weather is expected early next week, Tropical Cyclone Kompasu is forecast to intensify gradually and move towards the vicinity of the Luzon Strait in the next couple of days, moving into the South China Sea in midweek.
