Authorities say a fatal incident involving a man who plunged down a lift shaft at a housing estate in Ma On Shan on Saturday, was likely a deliberate act, and a preliminary inspection shows the lift is working normally.

A spokesman for the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) said the incident is suspected to be related to an “unauthorised opening” of the lift’s landing door.

Reports from the scene suggest that the 41-year-old fell from the tenth floor or higher. Police say they did not find any suicide note, but do not consider the case to be suspicious.

The EMSD spokesman said the department is “very concerned” about the incident, and officials will continue to investigate the case together with police.

As a precaution, the lift involved, together with all 40 elevators at Chevalier Garden will be inspected by the registered lift contractor, under supervision by EMSD staff, to ensure that they're safe.
