  • No Covid cases found in To Kwa Wan lockdown

Authorities said on Wednesday no new Covid-19 cases were found among 1,700 residents tested for the virus during an overnight lockdown of two buildings in To Kwa Wan.

The government ordered the testing of residents after sewage samples collected at Kiu Yu and Kiu Fat mansions on Lok Shan Road tested positive.

About 30 families did not answer the door.

Similar to previous ambush-style lockdowns, residents there had mixed views about the operation.

Some said they found it annoying.

“What were the criteria for imposing the lockdown and how effective was it? I think the government should instead focus on checking travellers who are exempted from quarantine,” a man said.

A woman also called the restrictions “troublesome”.

“Even though I don’t have to work, I have to go shopping early to prepare for the Chinese New Year,” she said.

But another resident praised the efficiency of the health workers, saying his test was done within three minutes.

“I think mass testing is necessary to protect people’s lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, 25 residents of a building in Quarry Bay were fined HK$5,000 each after they failed to show a negative coronavirus test result during a spot check on Wednesday morning.

Residents of Po Lee Building on King's Road were previously ordered to get tested for Covid-19.

The residents who failed to comply with the order were asked to get tested, or face a fine of HK$25,000 and a jail term of six months.
